Three Tips to Use Paint to Change the Energy of Your Room

Paint is a fascinating material.   On the physical level paint is applied to a wall surface as a liquid, and through a chemical process becomes a solid thin coating that sticks to your wall – which is kind of cool to think about.  That the coating can be different colors, textures, or applied in layers to create visual effects is even cooler.

From an energetic perspective paint in it’s liquid form is a plastic substance whose vibration can be altered or permeated.  Once the paint dries this vibration becomes more fixed and is sealed into the surface of the wall forming an imprint.  The imprint emits a vibrational frequency which effects the quality of experience in that room.  It creates a subtle atmosphere – a space of consciousness – that effects the quality of all the activities that take place there.

What this means is that every time you paint a room, you are creating a layer of vibrational imprint.  This imprint will reflect your state of being at the time you create it.  So if you are happy and excited to be painting your room the green color that you love because it inspires you, this uplifting vibration will be imprinted into your walls.  If you are resentful that you have to paint and angry that your partner is not helping you, then a heavy, resentful vibrational frequency will permeate your paint.   If you hire painters who just want to get the job over with so that they can collect their pay and survive, then this survival attitude will subtly influence your space, your choices, and behaviors.

Here are three tips you can use to paint to change the energy of your room:

1. Design Top Down
Spend a little time considering what you want the end result of the energy of your room to be like – even before you choose a color.  Do you want it to be light and uplifting or earthy and cozy?  Do you want energy that will help you be more productive and creative in your home office?  Are you wanting to reinvent your kitchen so that it’s a haven of nourishing satisfying energy?  Are you wanting to invite a new partner into your heart and ignite more intimate energies?  Or would you like to create the energy for a greater level of abundance?
Once you’re clear, on what energy you desire, then you have to feel that desire and energy inside yourself.  What is the energy of it like in your body, in your awareness?  Does it tickle the depths of your belly?  Does it warm your heart?  Does it make you tingle all over, or bring you to a quiet, grounded space?  Once you feel it, choose your colors from there.  It makes all the difference.  This process works outside your discursive mind, and gets you in touch with your authentic wantings.  Once you can feel it, you can embody what you want and create space for it to unfold in your life.

2. Charge your Paint
Before you begin to paint your walls, spend a few moments going inside.  Sit down with your paint can in front of you and remove the lid.  Close your eyes.  Breathe.  Go back to the space of feeling what you want the energy of your room to be like. Revel in this feeling!  Enjoy it!  Open to it more and more deeply until it becomes tangible light or vibration through your whole being.  When you feel ready, rub your hands together at chest height.  Slightly separate your hands and feel the energy, like a ball between them. Then gently extend your hands, one on each side of the paint can, palms facing inwards.  Let the energy flow though your heart, into your hands and permeate the paint. You can have your eyes softly open or closed, and take as long as you need, until you feel satisfied that the energy of the paint resonates with the energy inside you.

3. Get out of your Mind!
While painting, let go of worries, nagging fears, and repetitive thoughts that do not support you.  Focus on what you are creating!  Fall in love with the color you’ve chosen, be more conscious of every inch of the room you are transforming.  Feel how much you will enjoy being there.  And during it all hold the energy of what you want it all to feel like inside you.  Radiate.  If you get distracted by something – say a phone call – make sure that the conversation resonates with the energy you are holding.  Otherwise leave the room until it’s over and then spend a moment closing your eyes and re-engaging the feeling before you start working again.
Recently one of the clients I am coaching to paint her home office told me this great tip. “I light a candle before I begin painting, and then when I’m done I blow it out.  It helps me bring a greater awareness to the work I’m doing, and gives my painting sessions a clear beginning and ending – no fuzzy gray area!”

I hope that you find these tips useful to improving the energy of your living spaces.  If you give any of these suggestions a whirl, I’d love to hear your questions and experiences!  Drop me a line or call for a chat. And in the meantime, keep shining!

Sahasrara – Thousand Petal Lotus Painting

“The light that shines above the heavens and above this world, the light that shines in the highest world, beyond which there are no others – that is the light that shines in the hearts of men.” Chandogya Upanishad

This winter I had the opportunity to sit in meditation for 9 weeks.  One of the questions I was carrying inside me during this time has to do with a continual sense of disappointment or failure that I often experience.  It’s not a loud feeling in my consciousness.  It’s more like a subtle atmosphere that colors and shades events and experiences.

Often this sense of disappointment or failure will show it’s self when I complete something – a piece of art, a course of study, an important job, a milestone for my career.  I feel an initial excitement & exuberance, sense of accomplishment….and then, softly a growing malaise creeps in around the edges.  An existential emptiness.  “Is this it???”  Now you may say that after any great effort it is not uncommon to experience a low.  This is different than that.

Or I could play devil’s advocate and say that maybe I have been playing small.  Maybe the reason that I’m disappointed is because I haven’t found the thing that is the thing. You know, my real purpose.  That if I was doing that thing, then all would be OK.  It’s similar to the idea of finding the one when falling in love.  I don’t know about finding the one with regards to love, though I am open to the idea that I could have a greater vision for my life.  That I do have possibility and untapped potential.

Except, except, except…What if the sense of failure and disappointment I carry inside is actually a calling of the Spirit?  What if it is for some inner realization – an inner “accomplishment” – that I am yearning?  Is this why no external accomplishment brings a sense of satisfaction? Maybe this longing is for nothing that material existence can provide?

What a question!  What a relief!!!  Instead of feeling like a failure in all things, the recognition of a yearning that is beyond what the material world can offer creates freedom.  I now know that the part of me that has this yearning will not be satisfied by my material accomplishments.  I am not a failure!  I just have different parts of my consciousness that want different things.  With this self revelation, I can dedicate my time and energy towards satisfying both – an acknowledgement of the spiritual, and a new level of expression and engagement in the material.

So dear readers, this Painted Sacred Space,  which I call “Saharara” the thousand petal lotus is about creating a bridge.  A bridge for the desire I have to realize states of consciousness while in the material world.  It’s a collaboration between parts of my being that have until recently been at war.  The beginning of a virtuous circle.

I read the Upanishads this winter, and within was a reference to Saharara, which moved me deeply at the time. For the life of me I can not find it even after three attempts of skimming every chapter of the book, searching my meditation journal, and a google search.  In the meantime here are some excerpts from the wiki page:

“Sahasrara is related to the crown of the head. It is sometimes related to the pineal gland and sometimes to the pituitary gland.”

Sahasrara chakra symbolizes detachment from illusion; an essential element in obtaining supramental higher consciousness of the truth that one is all and all is one.

Often referred as thousand-petaled lotus, it is said to be the most subtle chakra in the system, relating to pure consciousness, and it is from this chakra that all the other chakras emanate. When a yogi is able to raise his or her kundalini, energy of consciousness, up to this point, the state of Samādhi is experienced.”

It took two weeks on and off to complete this painting.  So far my rest and meditations in this room have been excellent, and created a momentum that is both grounding and open.

Digital Paintings

digital painting Lotus 1As an artist, I am always excited to explore a new medium.  In 2011 I’ve begun to experiment with technology.  Earlier in the year, my husband and I have played with microcontrollers and a graphics programming language called Processing.  And more recently, I’ve begun to create digital paintings.

Above is the first digital painting I created.  The software I used was an open source Photoshop alternative which you can download for free called the Gimp.

This piece is a commission for a client who I did a recent intuitive consultation on her space, focused on what energies she wants to bring into her life in 2012.  The result was a series of digital paintings for different areas of her living space.  Now she can go forward feeling inspired, renewed, aligned, and supported in her goals for 2012.

I was really curious to see how the digital image would translate to print.  My expectations are exceeded!  The colors are true and vibrant.  The details are wonderfully rendered, and the painting is printed on canvas using the glicee process creating an archival piece of art.

I am now able to create paintings more quickly, and at less cost to my clients.  I also have the option of creating multiples of images, and having them printed at different sizes.  This meas a greater choice  – from a greeting card to a large canvas print.  Here is a link to my first series of digital paintings.

What do you think of these digital paintings?  Do you think digital painting will replace painting by hand? I’d love to know your thoughts!

“Good” space or Sacred Space?

Here is a gem of an article written by Linda Freya who is a Space Clearer and IST practitioner.  Follow this link to her website to learn more about her work and upcoming events.  What do you think makes a space sacred?  I’d love to hear your thoughts!

For the past couple of years I have taught meditation weekends in Portland, Oregon. The first two years the course was held in a very nice rented venue. The facility was really quite lovely. However, the energetics of the room reflected the eclectic energy of public Continue reading

Southern California travels

The keys to my LA pad are hot pink, green,  and on a rhinestone bedecked skull key chain which is symbolic of my impression of tinsel town.    A bit of glam and polished appearance which hide the inner workings of the entertainment industry machine.  I’m arriving during a heat wave and the AC motors of the building in front of me are blaring.  My little West Hollywood studio apartment which a friend has been kind enough let me stay while he is out of town is where I lay my head.  I’m spending a few days doing a couple of talks, connecting with friends, meeting new contacts and getting to know the City of Angels.

Some highlights that you should check out if you happen to visit:  Project Butterfly loft space in the Silver Lake arts district.  Their mission:  “To cross pollinate with other organizations and individuals engaged in positive transformation.  The project is devoted to holding space for visionaries, educators, guides, healers, artists and activists dedicated to creating unity through community.”  Its a great space and the organizer D They offer a host of inspiring events like the upcoming Awakening the Third Eye meditation workshop.  Click here to see upcoming events.

Saturday I attended  Tracey Stanton’s Clear your Clutter: Seven steps to a simpler Life workshop.  I learned about the deeper side of clutter, it’s energetic and emotional ties that keep me from opening to new possibilities in my life.  I left inspired and determined to tackle two key piles of stuff on my desk, as well as file all the papers in my inbox.

Sunday I participated in an ISIS day with a group of fellow friends.  Afterwards, Tracey and I stopped at Kind Kreme to enjoy infamous ice cream.  It’s infamous because just as we were turning the corner we got pulled over for making a left turn from the wrong lane.  I had the Kale-lime-coconut and Tracey enjoyed the chocolate super food with caramel syrup.  And then I purchased a 4 pack of raw food chocolate truffles which were amazing!  Though, I don’t know that it will make up for the cost of a traffic ticket.

The next day I was on the road to San Diego to visit Wenndi Freer who organized a talk I gave at Inner Journey in Oceanside.   Inner Journey is a community gathering place that hosts events, talks, and even has music of a weekend.   It was a fun event with a lively crowd who asked questions that allow the topic of Creativity and Consciousness to unfold with depth.

It’s been a great trip and I’m enjoying becoming more familiar with the Southern end of California….. though I am starting to long for home.  In the meantime, I’m enjoying  the view of the San Diego coast!

Use Paint to Manipulate Mood

Times of transition can be powerful phases in which to paint your home or business.  Often though, painting is the last thing you want to invest in – especially if you’re leaving!  When you’re selling your home, creating a space for you to leave and the new occupants to enter is important so that you can be supported in the transition to your new abode.  When done consciously, new paint can help you attract the buyers you want and help you let go of your old home, leaving space for the next phase of your life.

Here’s a link to an article by Broderick Perkins on how paint color can have a psychological effect on buyers when selling your home.

Are you trying to sell your home and considering painting?

I’d love to hear what you think about the article!

Sacred Space for Sex: the Bedroom

Do you want to spice up your sex life? Are you in a phase of exploring your sexuality? Or do you want to re-ignite the spark with that special someone? A Painted Sacred Space designed to evoke passion and sensuality will help you to increase vitality, libido, creativity, and fun in your bedroom.

Why is sexuality so compelling? When you are sexually active it engages the life force. The centers of energy located in the belly and at the base of the body are gateways into creativity, vitality, as well as the animalistic side of human consciousness. Exploring your relationship to your sexuality puts you in touch with these vital forces, and outside the controlled reality of your ordinary mental consciousness.

It is possible to have profound experiences while having sex and come in touch with deeply intimate parts of your being, bringing depth, opening, self awareness, and pleasure. When you become consciously aware of this driving force inside yourself and build a relationship with it, you can access it when you need to spark a creative idea, charm a potential business partner, power though that last mile of your morning run, or seduce a partner for an experience of shared bliss.

Creating Sacred Space for Desire

Becoming clear on what you want sexually is important. The more intense a desire is, the more vital force is tied up behind it. With a highly charged desire there can often be emotional entanglements, conditioning, or belief systems that compel you towards or away from the desire. Sometimes my clients are not even aware of the sea of desires inside, waiting to be discovered like exotic treasures. So let’s start simply. What do you like in bed? Are there certain positions that turn you on? Is there something your partner does that really works for you? Are there certain times of day or night where you feel your desire most? Work with your strengths and what you and your partner can do well together and see if you can make your best experiences even better. If there is something that your partner does that really does not work for you, come up with an alternate suggestion that you would like to try.

Once you are clear on the experience(s) you would like to have see if you can perceive a “feeling thread” or a core feeling that runs through the background of the majority of your desires.

It could a the desire to experience oneness, a desire to completely let go,  a feeling of freedom, or the desire to experience a particular quality of intensity. Regardless, once you have a sense of this essential desire inside, you can begin to design your Painted Sacred Space.

Here are some questions to help you:

  1. What colors resonate with your core desire?
  2. When you feel your core desire, are there textures that are most appealing?
  3. From the sense of your core desire, do you feel light and uplifted, or grounded and dense?
  4. Does the space of your core desire feel light or dark?
  5. When you feel your core desire does the space feel large and expansive, or close and intimate?

Now look at the answers to your questions. Begin to piece together ideally the kinds of colors, textures, and ambiance that will help facilitate your experience. Your core desire is the foundation of your Sacred Space for sex.  By openly acknowledging your core desire you can begin to arrange your bedroom to support it.
Create Space to Explore your fantasies:

Another way to spice up your sex life is to explore your fantasies. Start inside. What are the experiences you would like to have? What are the sensations you would like to experience? Write them down in a private place, or share them with your partner. Then create your fantasy bedroom!  Set the scene, the ambiance, the lighting, the music. Get the accessories, the outfits – whatever it takes. Have fun and make it a really special time between you and your partner! The act of giving a partner a fantasy that they have always wanted is an empowering and deeply fulfilling experience for both of you, sure to win you undying adoration and deepen the space for future experiences. The act of receiving a long held fantasy can be a hugely liberating experience that can demolish limiting belief systems, bring you of new levels of self confidence, and stoke your passion for life.

I’m to sexy for my self:

Let’s face it – here is nothing less sexy than a person who whines about what they’re not getting, or continually complains about a lackluster sex life.  Take a look at your bedroom.  What does it say about you?   Does it reflect your sizzling sensuality?  Does it inspire passionate abandon? Fear not!  A Painted Sacred Space will create the environment for you express your divine deliciousness.
Start with yourself.  Do you want the lover who looks at you like a tiger stalking it’s prey? Become the tiger and stalk your lover. Do you want a partner that oozes magnetic charm, makes you laugh, and is spontaneous in the bedroom? Find what sparks your inner magnetism, make yourself and your partner laugh, and surprise yourself by being spontaneous in your lovemaking. You will either attract a partner that resonates with you or create the experience you desire by knowing the parts of yourself that you have always wanted to be, and have not dared to express. A Painted Sacred Space is a reflection of an essential aspect of you.  Creating a sacred space in your bedroom that holds and reflects your sensuality, libido, creativity, and fun, will help you embody the vital forces inside you.

Recent Project: Sunshine, Joybubbles & Starfall

Sometimes my work is pure fun. Creating this children’s playroom was an exercise in following joy, trusting wonder, and play. During the consultation my client and I talked about each of her four children individually, as well as the larger family dynamic. We focused on each child’s strengths and challenges. The intention that emerged is for each child to be able to discover who they are while in a supportive environment. As a family the intention is to be able to rest on each other and cultivate mutual love and support, in an environment of open communication. To grow up to be the best of friends!

The playroom is a designated space where the kids can do anything. The extensive road system that is drawn all over the floor is a testament to this rule. As were the hand prints and drawings on the wall! One of the walls is all white board – though the children’s creative doodlings had strayed onto the the drywall surface as well.

The most striking feature about this playroom is the window which gives an underwater view of the pool in the backyard! The quality of light that comes into the room through the water is beautiful blue magic. The main challenge of this space is that because the window does not open, the space can become energetically heavy and stagnant. Leaving the doors open to receive fresh air on a regular basis is important, and my client being quite astute about her space has it professionally Space Cleared once a year.

With all the blue and the watery qualities in the space it felt important to balance it with a sunny robust color. A lovely yellow is what emerged in the consultation.   Because the ceiling is the largest surface it became the heart of the design. A rosette with a white central portal fortifying the heart center and creating an uplifting movement.

In order to help integrate the ceiling with the rest of the walls, I made circular stamps out of linoleum and pressed them around the corners of the room and over the doorway. I loved the irregular distribution of the paint as it reminded me of how light reflects off surfaces and made the ‘joybubbles’ seem effervescent and alive. I collected 4 star stamps and made a different color star for each child – gold, pink, silver, and blue.

I can’t wait to hear how the kids respond when they return from their summer vacation to the new playroom. I hope they enjoy playing in it as much as I did!

This has got to be the coolest view ever!!!
